This comprehensive scientific study analyzes satellite-observation data from 150,944 wellheads using breakthrough geospatial analytic techniques that for the first time yield reliable assessments of emissions performance at the company level across the entire United States. Includes technical details on methodology as well as company comments with permission.
The IRA Research Bulletin (Fall 2023) uses proprietary state-of-the-art satellite technology to observe methane emissions from active onshore wells in the US of the 25 largest listed oil and gas companies by market capitalization, compares them with company-reported emissions, and estimates EPA fees for excessive emissions for the period 2024-2026.
– Revision History –
December 14, 2023: A data entry error in one of the company’s reported Methane Intensity (EQT) was discovered which caused corresponding errors in EQT’s estimated IRA methane fees and methane emissions performance rating. This error has been corrected. As a result, the study now shows EQT as one of the industry’s leaders on methane emissions performance with no estimated IRA fee liability.
